Born Without Eyes, Smiley The Golden Retriever Has A Big Smile And An Even Bigger Heart

Smiley the golden retriever’s name suits him perfectly — incessantly happy both in face and demeanor, you wouldn’t guess this nine-year-old pooch had a difficult beginning.

Smiley was born without eyes, and had to have his lids sewn shut to prevent infections.

This little fur ball spent his first few years in a puppy mill, but has since been adopted by a loving family; he now even works as a certified therapy dog!

Smiley shares his infectious happiness to disabled and mentally ill patients every week.

Some of his patients never smile — except for when Smiley visits.

He also has this adorable habit of introducing himself to everyone.

How could you not fall in love with this face?

As he’s going about his doggy business — sniffing, listening, frolicking, nuzzling — you forget that he has a disability. His mom, Joanne, says that it’s important that he explores his surroundings on his own without people cringing every time he bumps into something.

And he bumps into things a lot… when he’s running towards you, he doesn’t know when to stop!

Smiley is completely in tune with Joanne: from the sound of her footsteps to the tone of her voice.

Her cues let him know if he is safe or if there is an obstacle in his way.

Joanne was the one who found Smiley in the puppy mill when he was 2 years old.

She brought him home and made him an honorary member of the family.

And the best part? Joanne is a professional dog trainer… which means she can give Smiley the proper care and love that he needs.

There are many more dogs like Smiley out there, patiently waiting for their Joannes to finally take them home.
