Check Out These Other-Worldly Photos Of Glowworms In New Zealand Caves

Photographer Joseph Michael recently captured a series of stunning long-exposure photos of arachnocampa luminosa, otherwise known as glowworms. The worms live in 30-million-year-old caves in New Zealand’s North Island. The images are so magical they look like they’ve been captured in another world.

The worms cling to every surface of the ancient caves, making them glow an eerie shade of blue.

The tiny dots of bright blue created by the worms resemble Christmas lights.

Both the larvae and adults have a bioluminescent glow.

The worms that cling to the ceiling look like star constellations.

Millions of glowing insects fill the caves.

Michael chose a long-exposure technique to reveal more of the hidden lives of these fascinating creatures.

The larvae produce fine threads of webbing that look like icicles in the glowing light.

The images reveal massive networks of glowworms inside every crevice of the caves.
