This Plot Hole In The Little Mermaid Will Ruin Your Childhood

Anyone who has seen The Little Mermaid can attest to its perfection. Everything about it is flawless – from the plot to the characters to the animation. And don’t get us started on the music because we’ll be here all day! Hopefully without sounding too much like an overexcited 9-year-old, we can definitely conclude that it is way up there among the best Disney movies of all time.

Is it possible, though, that our emotional childhood selves made us miss a few things? That perhaps one of the greatest films of all time may not be so great after all? Mary Falls, Washington D.C. resident, seems to think so in this incendiary Facebook post:

“After 26 years, today I stumbled on a plot hole in “The Little Mermaid” that will haunt me for the rest of my days. This changes everything.”

So what is this plot hole, pray tell?

“Well I found myself thinking, Ariel could have saved herself a lot of trouble if she had just learned to read and write. She could just scrawl out an explanation of her situation for Prince Eric.”

Hmmmm… we hate to admit it, but Mary might be on to something here.

“I figured, if she was the daughter of a king, she probably could read and write. She probably had the finest underwater education available, especially since she was the star of the under sea orchestral extravaganza.”

And to drive home her point, Mary continues:

“But I’ll be damned, she signed that contract with Ursula.”

And so she did. And in fancy writing, too!

“Crushingly, Ariel absolutely could’ve closed from moment one and happens to be a moron.”

Which, when you think about it now, is a perfectly valid point. After all, she gave away her voice and left her family for a man she doesn’t know.

Definitely not the smartest fish in the sea.
