A long, happy marriage in Hollywood is hard to come by. Especially with the ceaseless news about celebrity couples having short-lived marriages, it is sometimes hard to believe that some relationships do last in Tinseltown.
That is why a marriage like Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson’s deserves to be praised and talked about more. The couple celebrated their 29th wedding anniversary on April 30 and fans could only wonder how they managed to keep the relationship alive, especially when it is constantly under public scrutiny.
In an interview with GQ, Hanks said about their immediate spark, “Rita and I just looked at each other and – kaboing- that was that. I asked Rita if it was the real thing for her, and it just couldn’t be denied.”
Hanks and Wilson started their love story just like most actors in the industry do – by meeting on set. They were co-stars in Bosom Buddies in the early 1980s and soon appeared in more movies together. Most notably, they shared the screen in the 1993 rom-com Sleepless in Seattle, which cemented Hanks’ status as Hollywood’s most lovable leading men.
The two tied the knot in 1988 and 29 years later, they still admit that marriage “isn’t magic – the way it’s shown in the movies.”
“The success of our relationship was a matter of timing, maturity, and our willingness to have an intimate connection,” Hanks told Oprah in an interview. “We both know that no matter what, we’ll be with each other and we’ll get through it.”
Even with a happy marriage close to three decades under their belts, they are still not safe from from gossip about their relationship. But Wilson’s Instagram post on their anniversary puts all the blabbing to a rest. A picture of the two and a simple but touching caption proves that their marriage is just as strong as the day they said, “I do.”
With a picture of Hanks hugging her from behind, she captions, “29 years of marriage! Thank you, God, for bringing me this man.”
The couple prove time and time again that a relationship can work in show business. It’s just a matter of finding the right partner and being grateful for what you both share that makes it last. Hanks states, “My secret to a happy marriage is just being married to the right woman. I got lucky with the wonderful Rita Wilson. I’m the luckiest man alive.”
We raise our glasses to Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson and we wish them another 29 blissful years of marriage to come!
