This is the incredible moment a Sikh man in Punjab, India, broke the rules of his faith and removed his turban in a desperate bid to save a dog struggling in a river.

Sarwan Singh, 28, was travelling when he saw a group of men pointing to the canal, he explains: “I was shocked to see that there was a dog drowning but not one was actually helping.”
Mr Sarwan, who can’t actually swim himself, decided the only way he could reach to save the dog was by using his turban, which Sikhs are forbidden to remove in public.
“The moment I started taking off my turban, people watching around were shocked. They thought I was disrespecting my faith. But what was important at that point was to save the animal’s life.”
“The dog wasn’t comfortable. He was not coming to me at all. We had to follow him for around 200 meters before I was able to wrap my turban around his neck and pull him to safety.”
“The dog was frightened, so I fed him some biscuits and let him go on his own,” Sarwan added.
