Jeff Bezos shares his daily routine that contributed to his success

Jeff Bezos’ morning routine is more relatable than one might expect, minus the stress about the ongoing cost of living crisis.

Realistically, achieving the same wealth as Jeff Bezos would take an extraordinary amount of time—there’s even a mathematical formula to illustrate this. Plus, not everyone aspires to be a billionaire.

If you’re interested in adopting a Bezos-like mindset to enhance your own success, there’s a specific daily habit the Amazon founder attributes to his mental preparedness.

If you’re aiming for a financial milestone like a $200 billion net worth, yet wish to avoid everyday chores, Bezos offers a solution.

In a December 2023 interview on the Lex Fridman Podcast, Bezos shared insights on maintaining productivity and achieving success, revealing that he devotes time each morning to a particular practice.

He calls it ‘puttering time’—and no, it’s unrelated to golf.

‘Puttering time’ for Bezos involves leisurely moving around to relax before starting his day.

This routine might seem surprisingly ordinary, and Bezos admits, “I’m not as productive as you might think I am.”

He describes it as the ‘first’ thing he does, involving a casual ‘putter’, enjoying a coffee, and ‘slowly mov[ing] around’.

“I do believe in wandering,” Bezos remarked. “And I sort of read my phone for a while, I read newspapers for a while, I chat with Lauren [Sánchez], I drink my first coffee. I move pretty slowly in the first couple of hours.”

In addition to his morning ritual, Bezos emphasizes the importance of sleep. He goes to bed ‘early’ and wakes up ‘early’, needing ‘eight hours’ of sleep to remain proactive and feel his best, as stated in his 2020 book.

Bezos’ wife, Lauren Sánchez, shared with PEOPLE that her ‘favorite part of the day’ is their mornings together, which they spend in ‘magic moments’ conversing without the distraction of phones, before their children wake up.

Although Bezos occasionally checks his phone, Sánchez mentions that avoiding phones is a ‘rule’ they follow. “He definitely made that rule,” she commented.

This practice not only clears Bezos’ mind for the day ahead but also allows him and Sánchez to enjoy undistracted time together.
