Diwali is one of the most important holidays for Hindus, Sikhs, and Jains. The event is known as the Festival of Lights and celebrates the Hindu new year and the triumph of good over evil. It also honors the connection between humans and the objects and beings around them
Diwali lasts five days, and one very special day that is only celebrated in Nepal is called Kukur Tihar, and it’s dedicated to dogs.
During Kukur Tihar, dogs are given tikas, a small patch of colored powder applied to the forehead. The tikas mark the dogs as being both righteous and an object of devotion.
Each dog is given a malla to wear. These colorful flower necklaces are worn to show how important the dog is, and they symbolize respect and prayers.
In addition to the tikas and mallas, dogs also get lots of treats as the faithful celebrate the connection between humans and dogs.
Dogs are honored for their loyalty and friendship.
It’s not only family pets who are honored during the festival. Even strays are lavished with treats and get their own tikas and mallas.
Police dogs show off their mallas during Kukur Tihar.
Dogs have an important place in the Hindu faith. Some Hindus believe that a dog guards the gates of the afterlife.
Other days during Diwali are dedicated to honoring siblings, cows, and crows.
The principles of Kukur Tihar remind us all to honor the people and animals around us. And that’s a universal message we can all take.
