Anil Ambani’s Net Worth Plummeted to Zero
Anil Ambani, the chairman of Reliance Group, was once among the richest people in India with a net worth of billions of dollars. However, his net worth has now plummeted to zero due to his liabilities, as he claimed in a court filing in February 2020. His older brother, Mukesh Ambani, is the richest man in India with a net worth of over $50 billion. Anil is currently being sued over a $700 million debt by several state-controlled Chinese banks and has been ordered by a judge to set aside $100 million in a court account.
Anil was born in 1959 to Dhirubhai Ambani, who built an empire after starting as a gas station attendant in Yemen. After their father’s sudden death in 2002, Anil and Mukesh fought for control of the empire until their mother brokered a truce in 2005. Mukesh took control of the refining and petrochemical businesses, which proved to be far more valuable in the long run.
Outside of business, Anil is known for his love of fitness, having participated in every half marathon held in India since 2003. He also invested $825 million in Steven Spielberg’s DreamWorks Studios in 2009, which helped produce the Academy Award winning movie “Lincoln” in 2012. Anil is also a major Bollywood movie producer and owns over 44 FM radio stations, animation studios, and movie theaters in India. He is married to former Bollywood actress Tina Munim and has two sons, Anmol and Anshul.
