U.S. Begins First Coronavirus Clinical Trial, Testing Gilead’s Experimental Drug

U.S. health officials announced today that the first clinical trial for the covid-19 coronavirus has started. Gilead Sciences Inc’s experimental antiviral drug, remdesivir, will be tested in a select number of patients with the coronavirus. Remdesivir has shown some promising results against other coronaviruses that cause SARS and MERS, but until now it had not been tested in humans with coronaviruses.

The first trial participant is an American who was repatriated back to the US after being quarantined on the Diamond Princess cruise ship. The trial is being conducted at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, according to the National Institutes of Health.
