Dr. Anthony Fauci said that even with the rollout of the coronavirus vaccine, it is possible that Americans would still need to wear masks until 2022.
CNN’s Dana Bash interviewed the country’s top infectious disease expert on “State of the Union.” She asked whether Americans would still need to wear masks next year. Dr. Fauci said, “You know, I think it is possible that that’s the case and, again, it really depends on what you mean by normality.”
He clarified that he could not predict when the nation would go back to pre-pandemic normality, but believes that by the end of 2021, “we’re going to have a significant degree of normality beyond the terrible burden that all of us have been through over the last year.”
He reiterated his view that with anti-coronavirus measures in place there will be improvements moving towards normality. “As we get into the fall and the winter, by the end of the year, I agree with (President Joe Biden) completely that we will be approaching a degree of normality,” said Fauci.
According to the US Centers for Disease and Prevention, wearing masks help by protecting the people wearing them against the coronavirus and preventing its transmission.
