President Donald Trump’s team is persuading Republican legislators to intervene on his behalf in battleground states where Joe Biden won, Reuters reported.
Trump’s legal team, headed by former New York City Mayor Rudy Guiliani, is drumming up support from Republicans who control legislatures in Michigan and Pennsylvania.
The report quoted Michigan’s Republican House Speaker Lee Chatfield as having said that the person who wins the most votes will win the electoral votes of his state.
Chatfield and Michigan’s Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey are set to visit the White House on Friday. They were invited by President Trump and The Hill notes this could be a sign he may be seeking a way around the results.
Trump also reached out to officials in Wayne County who had sought to block the certification of votes there. Biden leads in Michigan by more than 140,000 votes.
Trump’s legal team appears to be trying to take the power of appointing electors away from the governors and secretaries of state and give it to friendly state lawmakers from the GOP.
