10-Second Hand Test Is Quickest Way to Spot Dementia Signs and Has People Freaking Out

A neurologist’s 10-second hand test has sent TikTok users into a self-diagnosis spiral.

Dr Adnan Husein, the neurologist behind the viral clip, posted a three-move sequence that has millions convinced they’ve spotted dementia in their own living rooms. The test, called the Luria Test or Fist-Edge-Palm test, requires making a fist, placing it on the opposite palm, flipping to rest the little-finger edge down, then flattening palm-down in a smooth, repeating loop.

The movement sounds simple. Most people trying it have discovered otherwise.

“Hands can display subtle clues about brain health,” Dr Husein said in the viral TikTok video.

“Certain changes in movement, tone, dexterity, or behaviour of the hands may point clinicians toward conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease, frontotemporal dementia, or other neurological disorders.”

The test was developed decades ago by Soviet neuropsychologist Alexander Luria as part of a broader battery of assessments for frontal lobe damage. It targets motor function, executive function and sequencing — all governed by the same brain region affected in several dementia types. In clinical practice, it is never administered alone; doctors pair it with memory assessments, language tests, behavioral observations and brain imaging before drawing any conclusions.

Dr Husein noted that only about 2% of people with normal cognition struggle to complete the Luria Test. That failure rate jumps to over 50% among Alzheimer’s patients and nearly 70% among those with frontotemporal dementia.

“Not every change in the hands means dementia,” he cautioned in the video.

However, he added, “when hand changes occur alongside memory loss, personality shifts, language difficulties, or problems with planning and judgment, they strengthen the case for neurological assessment.”

The mass anxiety reflects a familiar pattern. A viral finger flexibility test earlier this year triggered a similar wave of doctors clarifying that struggling with a social media challenge does not equal a clinical diagnosis. The core risk remains the same: a shaky first attempt, filmed under pressure while anxious about the outcome, places most participants squarely in the 98% of normal performers rather than the 2% who struggle without underlying conditions.

For those who fumbled Fist-Edge-Palm, the guidance is uncomplicated. Try again when rested, and reserve real concern for cases where other symptoms — memory loss, trouble finding words, personality changes — appear alongside the hand difficulties.
