The shooting occurred around 1:25 p.m. at Fairlane Town Center in Dearborn, located at 18900 Michigan Avenue near Evergreen Road. Police received calls reporting the incident at that time and immediately responded to the scene. Dearborn Police Issa Shahin said the shooting began as an argument between two groups inside the mall and escalated into gunfire.

Three people were shot inside the mall during the incident. One person died at the scene, while another victim died after being transported to a local hospital. A third victim was wounded and is receiving treatment at a local hospital. All three victims are young men believed to be in their late teens or early 20s, according to Shahin.

One of the victims suffered a gunshot wound to the head, while another was shot in the abdomen. The circumstances surrounding why two of the victims were fatally wounded while a third survived remain under investigation.

Fairlane Town Center, one of the largest shopping malls in the Detroit metropolitan area, was immediately placed on lockdown following the reports of gunfire. Videos posted to social media appeared to show shoppers and employees running from the mall after shots were heard. The Dearborn Police Department issued an urgent warning on social media urging residents and visitors to avoid the area while officers worked to secure the scene. The mall was evacuated as the investigation unfolded.

The investigation revealed that the shooting was not a random act of violence. Police said both parties involved in the dispute brought handguns to the mall. While the circumstances of the incident point to a targeted confrontation, no motive has been disclosed at this time. Investigators have also found no evidence to suggest that a robbery was involved in the shooting.

An employee who witnessed the incident told authorities that she heard at least four shots fired during the chaotic scene inside the mall. The presence of weapons brought to the mall created a dangerous environment for other shoppers and workers who were unaware of the developing situation. As people attempted to flee the mall, at least one person was struck by a car in the parking lot while trying to escape the chaos on the opposite side of the mall from where the shooting occurred.

At one point, a SWAT team was placed on standby to assist with the response, but the Dearborn Police Department later canceled the deployment. Michigan State Police are assisting Dearborn police with the investigation.

No suspects have been taken into custody as of Friday afternoon, though police said several people were being questioned in connection with the incident. An image of the alleged gunman was released during the investigation, but the suspect remained at large as of the latest reports.

Fairlane Town Center, which contains more than 125 stores and restaurants, is a major shopping destination in Dearborn. The mall’s location about nine miles west of downtown Detroit in a city with more than 100,000 residents makes it a significant commercial hub for the region. The shooting marks a violent breach of what is typically considered a public gathering space.

Dearborn Police Issa Shahin emphasized that “the safety of our residents and visitors remains our top priority. Shootings and other acts of violence are entirely unacceptable, and we will hold everyone involved fully accountable.”

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine the full circumstances of the dispute and identify the shooter. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Dearborn Police Department at 313-943-2240. Police said there are no additional threats to the public at this time.
