A massive search for a reported lioness and cub in central Indiana ended with no confirmed sighting by law enforcement.
The Madison County Sheriff’s Department launched a four-hour operation Thursday after receiving a call around 10 a.m. About two large exotic cats loose on South Country Road 50 West in Jackson Township, WXIN reported. Deputies and Indiana State Police deployed ground units and thermal drones across northern Hancock and southern Madison counties to track the supposed predators.
A resident reportedly told authorities he spotted a 300-pound lioness wearing a blue harness and a smaller cub from his back window. The sheriff’s department also noted it had received an earlier report from a drone operator who claimed to confirm a sighting of the big cats.
Despite the detailed descriptions from civilian callers, no law enforcement officer managed to spot either animal during the extensive search. The Madison County Sheriff’s Department announced it could not verify that the loose lions actually exist.
The department added that no lions had been reported missing from any animal sanctuaries as of Thursday. Officials also stated they were unaware of any permits within Madison County that would allow private ownership of a lion.
