9,000,000 Facing State of Emergency as Hurricane-like Nor’easter Targets East Coast with Urgent Warning

A state of emergency has been declared for millions as a massive storm threatens the East Coast.

This storm is a powerful Nor’easter, a type of storm that impacts the US east coast, named for the direction from which its winds usually originate.

The National Weather Service notes that Nor’easters can occur year-round, with their most frequent and severe occurrences between September and April.

These storms typically form between Georgia and New Jersey, bringing with them gale-force winds, snow, rain, and the potential for severe coastal flooding.

The current storm is intensifying as it moves north, with coastal winds anticipated to be between 40-60mph. AccuWeather has indicated that some gusts may reach as high as 80mph.

New Jersey authorities have alerted all nine million residents to prepare for hazardous weather as the storm approaches.

The State of Emergency commenced at 10pm on October 11. Acting Governor Tahesha Way posted on Twitter that authorities ‘anticipate a coastal storm that will bring flash flooding, heavy rain, and damaging winds’.

In her statement, she advised: “I urge all New Jerseyans to exercise caution, monitor local weather forecasts and warnings, stay informed on evacuation protocols, and remain off the roads unless absolutely necessary.”

The National Weather Service’s advisory on Saturday morning stated: “The combination of strong onshore winds, high surf, and high astronomical tides will likely lead to major coastal flooding in the Mid-Atlantic, especially along the coasts of Delaware, southern New Jersey and the Virginia Tidewater.”

They further advised: “Coastal residents are urged to heed warnings and follow guidance from local officials.”

As the storm arrives, the region can expect high winds, flooding, elevated tides, and increased surf conditions, with worsening circumstances anticipated through Monday.

The storm is projected to start receding on Tuesday, with the Nor’easter beginning to weaken and move out to sea.

Nor’easters are known for their destructive potential, having previously caused extensive damage amounting to billions of dollars, including significant coastal flooding.

Residents in the affected areas have been cautioned about the possibility of power outages and fallen trees due to the high winds.

Wind gusts reaching 80mph suggest potential hurricane-force conditions, as a category 1 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Wind Scale includes winds of 74 mph or greater.

The storm is expected to impact a significant portion of the East Coast.

Forecasts predict that the storm’s path will affect a stretch from North Carolina up to near New York City.

Notably, areas around New York City, Boston, and Philadelphia should brace for high winds and potential disruptions to air travel.
