A newborn baby has miraculously survived after being abandoned in a storm drain thanks to a dachshund that alerted his owner.
On April 3rd in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, 63-year-old Charmaine Keevy was led to a storm drain by her frantic weiner dog, Georgie.
Keevy originally thought the cries were coming from a cat, but after getting a closer look, she realised it was a baby.
Ms. Keevy then flagged down a passing car. Together with the driver, Cornie Viljoen, they managed to open the concrete cover with a steel bar.
60-year-old Ms. Viljoen entered the drain, which was six feet deep, to retrieve the baby.
Viljoen and Keevy said that the baby’s umbilical cord was still intact. They were also shocked to find a colony of red ants surrounding the baby.
“I just do not know why anyone could do this to a newborn baby, but I was just so glad that we were able to help her and save her life,” shared Viljoen. “I told Charmaine to call the emergency services right away.”
The baby was taken to the hospital where doctors found she was suffering from hypothermia and respiratory issues.
Hospital staff have named the baby Grace April.
Ms. Keevy added, “I usually take a different route on my dog walk, but for some reason we went another way.”

“I cannot help but feel that there is some sort of a plan and a purpose for that little girl’s life—it is a miracle without a doubt.”
