The Witcher’s fourth season has been revived, albeit with a new White Wolf at the helm. Netflix revealed on Saturday that Henry Cavill would leave the program after season 3, with Liam Hemsworth taking over as Geralt of Rivia.
The Witcher follows Geralt as he wanders the realm of “The Continent,” battling everything and everything that goes bump in the night, from ghouls to bruxas and more. It is based on Andrzej Sapkowski’s best-selling book series.
Cavill, 39, and Hemsworth, 32, both announced the news on Instagram, with Cavill saying he’ll be leaving the continent and “laying down” his sword, asking Hemsworth to take on the mantle of the White Wolf.
“My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventures, and alas, I will be laying down my medallion and my swords for Season 4. In my stead, the fantastic Mr Liam Hemsworth will be taking up the mantle of the White Wolf,” Cavill wrote. “As with the greatest of literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam’s take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men.”
Cavill ended his message by giving Hemsworth some advise, asking him to spend his time immersing himself in both the multifaceted character of Geralt and the fantastic universe of The Witcher.
“Liam, good sir, this character has such a wonderful depth to him, enjoy diving in and seeing what you can find,” He added.
“Henry, I’ve been a fan of yours for years and was inspired by what you brought to this beloved character,” he continued. “I may have some big boots to fill, but I’m truly excited to be stepping into The Witcher world.”
Before Hemsworth picks up the blade and wanders the continent as Geralt, he has a long way to go. The Witcher: Blood Origin, a spin-off investigating the genesis of the prototype Witcher, will launch on December 25, with The Witcher Season 3 following soon after in summer of 2023.
