A second sports journalist has died while covering the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Qatari photojournalist Khalid al-Misslam, was said to have “died abruptly” over the weekend.
“Al- Misslam, a Qatari, died suddenly while covering the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. We believe in Allah’s mercy and forgiveness for him, and send our deepest condolences to his family. We are all Allah’s and to Him we return,” the Qatari outlet said of the deceased journalist.
The details of the journalist’s death were not divulged by the Qatari government or local media sources, but this was the second death of a journalist during the World Cup this year.
Al-death Misslam’s happened only hours after Grant Wahl, 49, died after fainting at the Lusail Stadium while covering Argentina’s quarter-final match against the Netherlands.
Wahl made headlines this year by wearing an LGBTQ-themed shirt to the games in the notoriously anti-gay country. That behavior prompted Wahl’s gay brother to accuse Qatari operatives of murdering the journalist.
Wahl, on the other hand, had visited the World Cup’s medical facilities only a few days before his death in the stands during Friday’s game, complaining of tiredness and other illnesses.
Later reports stated that he was forced to miss many days of coverage because he was sick with bronchitis and was having problems sleeping.
Dr. Celine Gounder, a clinical associate professor of medicine at New York University School of Medicine and a CBS News contributor, is Wahl’s wife.
