Sonya Eddy, a beloved star of the medical drama “General Hospital,” has passed away at age 55, according to executive producer Frank Valentini.
Valentini broke the news on Twitter on Tuesday: “I am heartbroken about the loss of the incredible @TheRealSonyaEd. I truly loved her not only as actress, but as a friend. The lights in the hub of the nurse’s station will now be a little dimmer, but her spirit and light will live on in both the show and our set.”
Since the mid-1990s, Eddy has been a familiar face on television, appearing in shows like “Murphy Brown,” “Seinfeld,” “ER,” “Felicity,” “Fresh Off the Boat” and “Pen15,” among others. She also had bit parts in movies such as “Patch Adams,” “Matchstick Men” and “V/H/S/99.”
Her most prominent role was on the popular soap opera “General Hospital,” where she starred in nearly 550 episodes from 2006 until her death.
Octavia Spencer, a close friend of Eddy, paid tribute to him on Instagram with a heartfelt post.
“My friend @sonyaeddy passed away last night,” Spencer, 52, wrote alongside a photo of Eddy. “The world lost another creative angel. Her legions of @generalhospitalabc fans will miss her.”
