Selena Gomez shares requirements men have to meet to date her after she’s accused of being ‘high maintenance’

Selena Gomez is setting the record straight about being ‘high maintenance,’ asserting that there’s a big mix-up when it comes to boys understanding what having standards means in today’s dating world.

The buzz around Selena’s take on modern dating began swirling after a segment on SiriusXM last year. That conversation has popped up again on social media, showing Selena’s candid thoughts on her love life.

Amidst the internet’s buzz about her reaction with her new beau to Justin and Hailey Bieber’s baby news, Selena hoped to discuss her then-new track, ‘Single Soon.’ However, hosts Tony Fly and Symon zeroed in on a specific lyric.

They quoted, “I know I’m a little high maintenance, but I’m worth a try / Might not give a reason why (oh well),” and asked if she really sees herself that way. Selena’s response was clear:

“I think I have standards, and I think I live in a world right now where boys confuse standards with high maintenance.”

After some prodding from the hosts, Selena Gomez explained what her ‘X, Yand Z’ conditions were for dating. (SiriusXM)

“The line was really fun because I’m not ashamed to say. I actually require X, Y, and Z for you to be with me. So in a way, it was just meant to be for the attitude of the song, and that’s genuinely what I feel,” she explained.

Pressed further by the hosts, Selena shared her ‘X, Y, and Z’ conditions for dating, which surprisingly, aren’t high maintenance at all.

“You gotta be cool, man,” she elaborated. “Not cool in the way people think you’re cool. You just gotta be nice, make me laugh, and be good to my family and people around you.”

She also expressed her contentment with being single, emphasizing her comfort with her own company.

“I think everybody goes through the phase of, ‘Oh, it’d be nice to have someone,’ and I get that,” Selena shared.

“But you know, I’m just enjoying where I’m at and I just want to be happy with who I am so that whenever that person comes into my life, I can just have them add on to me instead of being this insecure, you know, person that I normally used to be.”

“It’s basically my way of saying it’s totally okay being on your own and it’s fun.”

By the year’s end, gossip columns were abuzz as Selena confirmed her new relationship with record producer and songwriter Benny Blanco.
