Airport passengers look on in horror as person dies after being sucked into plane engine

A tragic and shocking event unfolded at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport when a person was fatally sucked into a jet engine.

Onlookers, including passengers and airport staff, were left in utter disbelief as the incident took place beside a Cityhopper Embraer E190 aircraft.

“A horrific incident occurred today where a person became trapped in the engine of an aircraft,” the airport expressed in a somber statement.

“Our thoughts are with the loved ones and we care for the passengers and colleagues who witnessed this incident.”

The ill-fated aircraft was set for a 2.25pm departure to Billund, Denmark, when the tragedy struck.

The identity of the unfortunate individual, and whether they were a passenger or an employee, remains unclear at this time.

The airplane, operated by KLM, was in the process of being pushed from its gate when the incident occurred.

Following the incident, military police swiftly intervened, evacuating passengers and ensuring everyone’s safety.

Authorities have launched a full investigation to piece together how this tragic event came to pass.

The harrowing ordeal was also witnessed by those aboard the plane, adding to the traumatic experience.

KLM issued a statement confirming the fatal event: “A fatal incident took place at Schiphol today during which a person ended up in a running aircraft engine. Sadly, this person has died.

“The flight concerned was KL1341 bound for Billund. We are currently taking care of the passengers and employees who witnessed the incident at Schiphol. The circumstances are currently under investigation.”

Witnesses spoke to local media, describing the noise as ‘hellish’ as the tragedy unfolded before their eyes.

Another added to the grim scene: “Many people saw it happen.”

Dutch Minister for Infrastructure, Mark Harbers, conveyed his condolences: “Terrible news about a fatal accident today at Schiphol. My condolences go out to the relatives of the victim and the people who witnessed the accident.”

The Dutch Safety Board has dispatched three inspectors to spearhead the preliminary investigation and uncover the factors leading to this catastrophic incident.

Photos capturing the aftermath showed emergency services swarming the tarmac, highlighting the severity of the incident.

The Pilots union VNV also shared their sympathies, stating: “Our first concern and thoughts go out to those involved and their relatives.

“We offer our cooperation and expertise in the investigation into the exact cause.”
