The Boys is known for pushing the envelope with its shocking content, but actor Chace Crawford recently shared his hesitations about filming one particularly notorious scene. The Amazon Prime series is packed with bizarre and off-putting moments, and they only intensify when viewed without any context. In the third season’s sixth episode, titled ‘Herogasm’, Crawford’s character, The Deep, engages in a sexual act with an octopus. While audiences found the scene grotesquely amusing, Crawford confessed it was a different story on his end.
“It’s so funny and brilliant now, but when that came up, I was like, ‘Oh God, how’s this going to work?’” Crawford recounted to Rolling Stone. He even confessed, “And then it got 24 hours out from the first day I had to shoot it and I almost had a panic attack.” It seems the actor might have reconsidered his role had he known this scenario was in the cards. You really can’t fault him for that.
The Gossip Girl alum went on to describe how The Boys’ creator, Eric Kripke, supported him through the process. He revealed, “I called Kripke – he’s so great. He’s got a million things going on but his door’s always open.” Crawford expressed his initial concerns, “I’m like, ‘How are we gonna do this? What are the angles gonna be? How naked do I have to be?'” Thankfully, Kripke was accommodating and even adjusted a shot to help Crawford feel more comfortable. This adjustment, along with the decision to film on a closed set, likely made the experience more bearable for Crawford.
Despite the absence of an intimacy coordinator for this peculiar scene, as reported by Rolling Stone, Crawford found humor in the physical aspects of the shoot. “But yeah, just the act of picking up the octopus and getting a wet octopus in the bed was so funny and weird. And then it doesn’t come out for a year almost, and you’re like, ‘How is this going to be received?’” he reflected.
Although Crawford has faced some teasing on social media for the scene, it appears he doesn’t mind too much, probably because of the global success and critical acclaim The Boys has received. As the series continues to captivate audiences worldwide, one can hope for more unforgettable scenes—though perhaps without any additional sea creature intimacy.
