Donald Trump had a terrifyingly close call when gunshots disrupted his rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, resulting in chaos and bloodshed.
It was around 6:15pm yesterday (13 July), and Trump was passionately addressing his supporters when suddenly, the crack of gunfire erupted.
Captured on video, the harrowing moment unfolded with several loud bangs penetrating the air. The rally erupted into panic.
In a split second, Trump’s hand shot up to shield his face, and he quickly ducked for cover. Secret Service agents sprang into action, swarming the former president to shield him from further harm.
Despite the shock and visible blood, the 78-year-old displayed his trademark defiance. As he was escorted offstage by Secret Service agents, Trump managed to raise a fist high, signaling his unbroken spirit.
Earlier today, the Secret Service issued a chilling confirmation: “a suspected shooter fired multiple shots toward the stage from an elevated position outside of the rally venue.” The statement further detailed, “US Secret Service personnel neutralized the shooter, who is now deceased. US Secret Service quickly responded with protective measures and the former president is safe and being evaluated.”
Following the incident, Trump turned to his social media platform, Truth Social, to express his thoughts and update on his condition.
In a heartfelt post, he wrote: “I want to thank the United States Secret Service and all of Law Enforcement, for their rapid response on the shooting that just took place in Butler, Pennsylvania.”
“Most importantly, I want to extend my condolences to the family of the person at the rally who was killed, and also to the family of another person that was badly injured.”
“It is incredible that such an act can take place in our country. Nothing is known at this time about the shooter, who is now dead.
“I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear. I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin.
“Much bleeding took place, so I realised then what was happening. GOD BLESS AMERICA!”
After a brief hospital visit, Trump is now recuperating at his New Jersey home, as reported by the BBC.
The Republican National Committee shared their relief on their website stating, “President Trump is doing well and he is grateful to law enforcement and first responders for their fast action.”
They added, “President Trump looks forward to joining you all in Milwaukee as we proceed with our convention to nominate him to serve as the 47th President of the United States. As our party’s nominee, President Trump will continue to share his vision to Make America Great Again.”
As the investigation continues, the Secret Service has involved the FBI, who have identified the alleged shooter as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks from Bethel Park in Pennsylvania.
The community is mourning as one rally attendee was killed and two others were critically injured, highlighting the grave realities of political gatherings in today’s tense climate.
