US Open shares painfully awkward video of a supposed date gone wrong, and it’s gone absolutely viral

Experiencing rejection from your crush is tough enough in private, but having the US Open broadcast it on Twitter for everyone to see is a whole new level of public humiliation (pun intended).

The prestigious tennis event has been ongoing in New York for the past few weeks, beginning with preliminary rounds on August 19 and officially kicking off the tournament on August 26.

While many tune in to the US Open to witness the feats of tennis legends, some of us, myself included, are here for the entertaining off-court moments.

The US Open’s Twitter account seems to be in agreement.

In a five-second video clip that epitomizes cinematic brilliance, the US Open shared an awkward interaction on Twitter that occurred during the match between Frances Tiafoe and Aleksandar Kovacevic.

In this brief video, a man returns to his seat holding two drinks, seemingly ready to offer one to the woman next to him. However, another man steps in and offers her a drink, which she accepts.

What ensues is priceless. There’s a brief moment of hesitation, a shocked expression, and an awkward hair adjustment. In just five seconds, the video reveals so much yet leaves so much unsaid about these two individuals. The US Open fittingly captioned the post: “This is cinema.”

It’s unclear whether these individuals knew each other or were on a date. Both had rings on their engagement fingers, which adds another layer of mystery. Nonetheless, the video has gone viral on Twitter, amassing 5.8 million views and over 40,000 likes (at the time of writing).

“If you look closely you can actually pinpoint the exact moment his heart breaks in two,” one user commented.

“To whoever’s running this account: you deserve a raise and a bonus,” another user added.

One user wrote an insightful monologue filled with questions, saying, “This physically hurt me. I need to know information NOW. Who is that other man? Who is the woman? Which man is she with? Why was the sweet man under the impression he was the one getting her a drink? Why did the other man get her one? What’s their connection?

“Are all three of them connected? Are they in attendance together? How much do those drinks cost? Does the woman have a favorite drink at The Open? Is this their first time attending? Where are they from? HELP ME PLEASE.”

As another user aptly noted, “There is no way this is not a Seinfeld scene.”
