People have taken to social media to discuss a new feature of Apple’s latest AirPods 4, expressing uncertainty about how it will appear ‘in public’.
On September 9, Apple CEO Tim Cook presented the newest advancements in the company’s technology at the ‘It’s Glowtime’ event held at Apple’s campus in Cupertino, California.
In addition to the excitement over the latest iPhone – the iPhone 16, Apple also unveiled the newest version of its AirPods – the AirPods 4.
According to Apple’s website, the AirPods 4 offer ‘a massive improvement in sound quality’ with an ‘entirely new acoustic architecture, low-distortion driver, and high dynamic range amplifier’. They also feature ‘Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking for the most immersive media experience’.
Furthermore, it states: “With the H2 chip, AirPods 4 unlock intelligent audio experiences only Apple silicon can deliver, such as Voice Isolation, enabling clearer call quality no matter the environmental conditions.”
A notable addition is Siri Interactions, which allows users to ‘simply nod their head yes or gently shake their head no to respond to Siri announcements’, including answering or rejecting an incoming call.
In June 2024, Apple’s newsroom elaborated: “With Siri Interactions, that experience gets even more personal, private, and convenient. AirPods Pro users will be able to simply nod their head yes or gently shake their head no to respond to Siri announcements, which is particularly helpful in crowded or quiet areas where they may not want to speak out loud.
“Enabled by machine learning on the H2 chip, Siri Interactions allow users to answer or dismiss calls, interact with messages, manage notifications, and so much more – all without speaking.”
The online community quickly shared their opinions.
Numerous Twitter users posted videos of individuals shaking their heads side-to-side.
One user commented: “I just snorted holy.”
Another remarked: “But if I answered a call like this, I would look weird outside…”
Another agreed: “This is gonna look so funny in public.”
Someone else noted: “Me rejecting every call.”
A final user joked: “So not only can I look like I’m talking to myself but I can nod to myself too!”
The iPhone 16 series and the latest AirPods, including the AirPods 4, are scheduled to go on sale later this month, but preorders are available now.
