Fans in a frenzy over Martin Short’s comment to Selena Gomez while walking on stage at Emmys

Fans have taken to social media in a frenzy after realizing the exact words Martin Short whispered to Selena Gomez during their time on stage at the Emmys.

The 76th Emmy Awards occurred last night (September 15), with notable wins shared among Shōgun, Hacks, The Bear, and Baby Reindeer. However, the spotlight was mostly on the chemistry between Selena Gomez, Martin Short, and Steve Martin.

The trio appeared at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles to present the first award of the evening: Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. The award ultimately went to Ebon Moss-Bachrach for his performance in The Bear.

Before Moss-Bachrach could give his speech, Gomez, Short, and Martin, who were all nominees for their work in Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building, entertained the audience with a hilarious skit.

Gomez kicked things off: “What a magical evening it’s been trying to remember people’s names.”

Short humorously responded: “And pretending that we’ve seen their shows.”

Martin then added a joke about the ubiquity of Nicole Kidman in the acting scene.

He quipped: “When I see an actor I don’t know, I just say, ‘I loved your scene with Nicole Kidman’, and nine times out of ten I’m right.”

The skit continued to entertain, but it was a moment before the comedy that truly moved viewers.

As they walked onstage, Gomez quietly said: “I’m about to fall,” likely indicating her nervousness or the risk of stumbling in her heels.

Short tenderly replied: “I got you baby.”

Fans were quick to react on social media, charmed by the 74-year-old’s supportive comment as he put his arm around Gomez.

One Twitter user wrote: “Martin Short saying to Selena ‘I got you baby’ to make her feel more comfortable on stage oh my gawd I love them so much.”

Another tweeted: “I love that you can hear Martin Short say ‘I got you baby’ to Selena Gomez as they’re walking out on stage at the Emmys.”

A third person commented: “This is what I came to look for, he is so sweet!”

While none of the Only Murders in the Building stars secured an Emmy, they certainly won hearts.

Short and Martin were both nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, an award that went to Jeremy Allen White for his role in The Bear.

Gomez was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, which was awarded to Jean Smart for her performance in Hacks.
