Freddie Prinze Jr set to return to one of his most iconic film roles

Freddie Prinze Jr is making his return in a highly anticipated legacy sequel.

However, it’s not a remake of the 1999 rom-com She’s All That, nor will he be reprising his role as Fred Jones in a new Scooby-Doo adventure, unfortunately.

Now 48, Prinze Jr was just 21 when he landed a part in the 1997 horror film that has garnered enough popularity to warrant a reboot.

The original, penned by Kevin Williamson (Scream, Dawson’s Creek), featured Prinze Jr, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Ryan Phillippe.

Following the declaration that the beloved classic, titled I Know What You Did Last Summer, would be rebooted, Prinze Jr has officially signed on to reprise his original role.

The new version of I Know What You Did Last Summer is slated for a summer release next year. It will serve as a direct sequel to the first film and its 1998 follow-up, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer.

While plot details are being closely guarded, it’s fair to assume that the new characters will have to confront the traumatic incidents that shook the seaside town of Southport, New Carolina, about thirty years earlier. Similar to Scream (2022), the forthcoming installment in the hook-wielding killer series will feature the Fisherman killer menacing a new set of protagonists who will seek help from the original survivors.

Prinze Jr will return as Ray Bronson, a character he portrayed in the first two films. According to Deadline, the actor has signed on after discussions with Sony Pictures. Jennifer Love Hewitt is reportedly still in negotiations to reprise her role as Julie James, though no official confirmation has been announced yet.

The new film will feature Chase Sui Wonders from Bodies Bodies Bodies, Madelyn Cline from Glass Onion, Sarah Pidgeon from The Wilds, Tyriq Withers from Atlanta, and Jonah Hauer-King from The Little Mermaid.

Even if you haven’t seen the 1997 film, it’s easy to figure out why Gellar and Phillippe won’t be appearing this time, though you can expect that their characters, Helen Shivers and Barry Cox, will at least be referred to in the sequel.

Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, known for directing the dark comedy Do Revenge featuring Maya Hawke and Camila Mendes, and for co-writing Thor: Love and Thunder, is set to direct the horror film. The script is co-written by Robinson and Sam Lansky, based on a draft by Leah McKendrick.

Mendes was initially part of the cast for I Know What You Did Last Summer but had to leave the project earlier this month, potentially due to a scheduling conflict with Amazon MGM Studios and Mattel Films’ Masters of the Universe, in which she’s slated to play Teela. Wonders joined the horror reboot’s cast soon after Mendes’ departure.

I Know What You Did Last Summer will hit cinemas on July 18, 2025.
