John Stamos has faced backlash after posting a photo on social media in which he’s wearing a bald cap.
In the post, the 61-year-old clarified that the cap was a gesture of ‘solidarity’ with his friend and former Full House co-star Dave Coulier. However, the move did not sit well with some of his followers.
Earlier this week, 65-year-old Coulier disclosed that he is undergoing treatment for stage 3 non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
Non-Hodgkin lymphoma is a cancer that emerges in the lymphatic system, an integral part of the immune system.
Before receiving the diagnosis, Coulier had been grappling with a respiratory infection that led to significant swelling in one of his lymph nodes.
Shortly after, he was informed that he had an aggressive form of the cancer.
“Three days later, my doctors called me back and they said, ‘We wish we had better news for you, but you have non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and it’s called B cell and it’s very aggressive,’” Coulier shared with People.
“I went from, I got a little bit of a head cold to I have cancer, and it was pretty overwhelming.
“This has been a really fast roller coaster ride of a journey.”
Two weeks following his diagnosis, Coulier chose to shave his head as a ‘preemptive strike’.
After Coulier revealed his health battle, Stamos posted on Instagram to show his support by wearing a bald cap.
“Nothing like throwing on a bald cap and flexing some Photoshop skills to show some love and solidarity with my bro @dcoulier,” Stamos wrote.
“You’re handling this with so much strength and positivity—it’s inspiring. I know you’re going to get through this, and I’m proud to stand with you every step of the way. I love you.”
However, some followers criticized the post and suggested that Stamos should have shaved his head instead.
One commenter said: “Hate to be that person but this is more insulting by putting on a bald cap then not shaving ur head. A person with cancer doesn’t have a ‘cap’ they can take off.”
Another added: “Seriously just couldn’t shave your head bro?”
Others stepped in to defend Stamos. One user wrote: “Why are you guys being so miserable on a supportive post? Dave isn’t offended so why are you?
“John has a job and contracts that don’t allow him to change his appearance unless stated otherwise.
“Dave is an actor himself and understands that. What’s most important is John is there for his friend when he needs him. Praying for Dave.”
Another supporter commented: “Awwww this is so cute… also, to anyone in the comments… if Dave isn’t offended by this, you shouldn’t be either and remember… John is an actor and may need his hair for his JOB. This should be a space filled with positivity and hope… take the negativity elsewhere.”
