Billie Eilish reveals a deeply personal tattoo she once promised fans wouldn’t see

People choose to get tattoos for a variety of reasons, such as establishing deeper ties with specific communities, marking significant life events, or simply for sentimental value.

Lady Gaga, for instance, has numerous tattoos that honor her albums and collaborations with other artists. Similarly, ‘Sunflower’ singer Post Malone has shared that he began getting face tattoos due to insecurities about his appearance.

Billie Eilish, another celebrity who embraces tattoos, is not hesitant to get inked.

The ‘Bad Guy’ artist is known to have five tattoos, though she has hinted at having others that are not publicly disclosed or visible. At 22 years old, she has expressed the idea of keeping her body art concealed from the public eye, also indicating that facial tattoos like Post Malone’s are not in her plans.

In a 2017 interview with Vanity Fair, she remarked, “The only tattoos I wanna get are the ones that barely anyone can see.”

Three years later, at age 18, Eilish got her first tattoo, a decision made following her sweeping success at the Grammy Awards. She told the publication, “I did get a tattoo, but you won’t ever see it.”

In 2021, Eilish shared updates with her fans, revealing she had added two more tattoos to her collection.

Despite her initial intent to have tattoos ‘barely anyone can see’, one of her tattoos is visible on the side of her hand. This tattoo includes a drawing of fairies, inspired by a book called Fairyopolis that Eilish treasured as a child. “They’re like my little guardian angel fairies,” she explained.

She also has a ‘big boy’ dragon tattoo on her waist, which she’s shown off on Instagram, though her first tattoo remains hidden from public view. It wasn’t until a few years later that Eilish disclosed details about this tattoo, noting it is located on her ribcage and says ‘Eilish’. “Yes, I love myself,” she commented.

The placement of this tattoo means it is usually covered by clothing, making it easy to keep private from the public.

However, fans had a rare opportunity to see this tattoo when Eilish’s friend, Annabel Zimmer, daughter of film composer Hans Zimmer, shared a photo. In the image, Eilish is seen smiling and tilting her head towards the sun, wearing sunglasses and her hair pulled back, with the tattoo just visible beneath her bikini strap.

Although clearer images might exist online, followers of the singer accepted this as the best view they could get. You can sort of see it here:

Rolling Stone has reported that this tattoo is in an ‘ornate, gothic font,’ with her name written in pointed letters across her skin. In October 2023, Eilish unveiled her most recent tattoo, an abstract design running down the center of her back.
