A teenager became an internet sensation in 2007 when he sold his spot in line for the inaugural iPhone for $800, a decision that proved to be quite lucrative.
Today, the iPhone 16 has captured the attention of Apple enthusiasts and tech experts alike, but there was a time when the original iPhone’s release was the focal point of everyone’s fascination.
In 2007, Steve Jobs launched the first Apple phone, prompting people to go to great lengths to acquire the latest technology.
Among them was a woman in Dallas who arrived at a store with $100,000 in hopes of buying out the store’s entire stock of the new phones.
She was so determined that she offered the first person in line $800 for his spot.
The young man had been waiting for hours, even camping out to secure his position at the front.
The woman’s plan was to sell $100,000 worth of iPhones on eBay for a potential profit, as people were willing to pay a premium for the new device.
However, her strategy was thwarted when she discovered the store had a one-phone-per-customer policy.
After paying $800 to move to the front, she left the store with only a single iPhone.
Meanwhile, Marc Rebillet, the man who sold his spot, quickly entered the store and purchased a phone himself.
Marc recounted on Steve-O’s Wild Ride! Podcast years later that he initially doubted the authenticity of the $800 offer.
The entire viral incident was captured on camera, and with television coverage, he assumed it might be a marketing stunt.
“What made her think she was going to keep everyone’s place in line?” Steve-O commented on the podcast.
Since then, Marc has earned over $100,000 through his music and comedy career, along with a thriving YouTube channel.
Now 35, he entertains nearly 2.5 million subscribers on YouTube with improvised music, often donning his trademark bathrobe and briefs.
Quite a departure from waiting in line for an iPhone, wouldn’t you say?
