Bill Burr offered his perspective on why there seems to be indifference toward the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
On Wednesday, December 4th, at around 6:45am, Thompson was shot and killed outside the Hilton Hotel in Manhattan, New York.
A video released by law enforcement captured the moment when an individual with a firearm approached the UnitedHealthcare CEO from behind and opened fire.
New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch informed the media that the attack was likely ‘premeditated, preplanned,’ and ‘targeted,’ with the assailant fleeing the scene.
“Based on the evidence we have so far, it does appear the victim was specifically targeted. But at this point, we do not know why,” stated the NYPD chief of detectives.
Luigi Nicholas Mangione, 26, was apprehended and charged with Thompson’s murder following his arrest at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, after a tip-off led officials to him.
Originally from Honolulu, Hawaii, Mangione has also been charged with possessing an unlicensed firearm, forgery, and providing false identification to police officials.
He is currently detained in Pennsylvania and is awaiting extradition to New York to face his charges. During a brief court appearance, he was denied bail and will remain in custody for the foreseeable future.
Comedian Bill Burr discussed Thompson’s untimely demise on his podcast Anything Better?, which he co-hosts with comedian Paul Virzi.
Burr started by saying, “I was sitting there reading an article, and a guy was like, ‘Oh my god, he’s such a great guy, He had a wife and kids, and he’s such a great guy’. And then you find out, he and the other guys he’s working for are getting sued for $121 million for dumping a stock and not letting the other people know.”
The comedian was alluding to a Department of Justice investigation into the UnitedHealthcare CEO for alleged insider trading activities.
Burr went on to say, “They’re gangsters dude, f**king gangsters, and then when one of them gets whacked or something they’re like, ‘Oh my god he was such a good guy’. It’s a dirty game.”
“Why is there this level of coverage? Somebody gets gunned down in New York every f**king day, now all of a sudden these experts have to weigh in? That’s because of the status, we can’t have white guys in suits getting whacked,” Burr added.
Bill Burr’s insights into the situation have been applauded online, with one person commenting: “His point is completely spot on. How many murders in New York since this guy was killed? There has to be some but we don’t know cause no one gives a single f**k about it.”
Another individual remarked, “Really is the meat of the issue imo, hundreds of people are murdered everyday. As soon as it’s a rich guy people seem to care. Bill consistently has a pretty good take on stuff.”
