The famous Domino’s three-dot logo is instantly recognizable, but many people may not know the story behind its creation.
Unless you’re a committed fan of Pizza Hut, you might have found yourself with several Domino’s boxes scattered across your room after a night out.
The origins of Domino’s date back to 1960 when brothers Tom and James Monaghan opened their first store, originally named ‘DomniNick’, in Michigan, USA.
A year later, after Tom bought out James’ share, the store’s name was changed to Domino’s Pizza, and the logo we know today was developed.
Initially, there was a different plan for the three dots in the logo and their significance.
According to the Domino’s website, “The three dots on our logo represent the three stores that Tom originally planned to open.”
However, instead of stopping at three locations, the number of stores continued to grow.
In January 2021, Don Meij, the former group CEO and managing director of Domino’s Pizza Enterprises, addressed a common question he receives about the company on Facebook.
His post stated: “One question I get asked a lot is, ‘What does the Domino’s logo mean?’”
He explained that the “famous dots actually represent the first three stores opened by Domino’s founder Tom Monaghan in the 1960s.”
Meij added: “The original plan was to add one new dot for each new store, but that idea didn’t last long as more and more dots rapidly joined the Domino’s family.”
“Those three dots have now grown to more than 17,000 around the globe!”
As of 2023, there are over 20,900 Domino’s stores worldwide.
The post attracted a lot of attention and comments from social media users.
One person remarked: “Huh…come full circle to the original logo basically.”
Another joked: “I thought it represented how many pieces of pepperoni on two pizzas…”
A third said: “Current logo is a good one, scales to any size and is instantly recognizable even if it didn’t say Domino’s you’d still know it was for the brand.”
Another user humorously asked: “Has someone tried to design a Domino’s logo with 17,000 dots on it just for fun?”
And someone else quipped: “Do the three dots represent how good the pizzas are out of five?”
Touché.
