Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt finalize divorce settlement after protracted 8-year dispute

After an extended legal battle lasting eight years, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have finally reached a divorce settlement.

The two actors first crossed paths on the set of “Mr and Mrs Smith” in 2003, and by 2005, their romantic relationship had begun. They share six children, consisting of three sons and three daughters, and they wed in 2014.

Just two years following their marriage, Jolie sought a divorce from Pitt in 2016, citing irreconcilable differences as the cause.

In 2017, a statement from the couple indicated that they planned to manage their divorce proceedings privately, as reported by PEOPLE.

During the divorce proceedings, court documents disclosed that Jolie had accused Pitt of attacking her, with an allegation that one of their children was also assaulted during an incident on a plane on September 14, 2016—claims Pitt has denied.

The FBI conducted an investigation into the allegations, but no charges were brought against Pitt. Now, a settlement has been agreed upon by both parties.

Jolie’s attorney, James Simon, commented (via Sky News): “More than eight years ago, Angelina filed for divorce from Mr Pitt.”

“She and the children left all of the properties they had shared with Mr Pitt, and since that time she has focused on finding peace and healing for their family.”

“This is just one part of a long ongoing process that started eight years ago. Frankly, Angelina is exhausted, but she is relieved this one part is over.”

Sky News also notes that no court documents have been submitted, and judicial approval is still required for the settlement. However, this is not their only ongoing legal matter.

The former partners are also in conflict over their joint $25 million winery in southern France. In 2022, Pitt accused Jolie of violating “contractual rights” by selling her stake in Château Miraval to a Russian oligarch without his consent, according to the BBC.

Court documents and statements from Pitt’s legal team suggest that an agreed-upon one-euro payment was not made when the ownership was transferred.

In response, Jolie’s former company, Nouvel, countersued, claiming she attempted to negotiate the sale with Pitt, who allegedly insisted on her signing a nondisclosure agreement concerning him.

Her countersuit further alleges that Pitt is engaged in a “vindictive war” against her, as reported by PEOPLE.

The potential effects of the divorce settlement on this lawsuit remain uncertain, according to CBS News.
