A former Secret Service agent is advising individuals on how to enhance their personal safety while in public spaces by sharing some practical tips.
Although we believe we are vigilant in public situations, our awareness can sometimes waver.
Scott Bryson, who identifies himself as a retired Secret Service agent, shares safety advice with his 250,000 followers on TikTok.
In a recent video, he offered insights on how those of us who may not be as street-smart can take additional measures to protect ourselves.
The first piece of advice is simple: when entering a store or parking your car, you should ‘put your phone away’.
‘Stay off your phone’, he emphasized. His next suggestion involves choosing a parking spot wisely, particularly cautioning women.
He elaborated: “Ladies, especially listen. If you park and a car is right next to yours, very close to the line, that should be a warning sign.”
He advised evaluating the situation by asking, ‘Is there someone in the adjacent vehicle? Is it a minivan? Does it have sliding doors? Is it an SUV?’
Scott added: “I’m not saying you shouldn’t get into your car, but proceed with caution. Look around before acting.
“Don’t just carelessly get into your car. It might be harmless, but it could be risky.”
The third recommendation is for when you’re at a gas station. Scott suggests leaning against your car while refueling.
‘This way, your field of vision is reduced from 360 to 180 degrees, allowing you to be more aware’, he said. ‘If someone with bad intentions approaches, use the gas nozzle defensively. No one likes being sprayed with gas; it’ll likely deter them.”
Lastly, he advised choosing a seat with a clear view of the entrance in places like restaurants, so you are aware of the exits.
In situations where seats face one way, like in cinemas, Scott recommended sitting at the end of the aisle, saying: “If you’re prepared to fight, you can stand and confront the threat.
“If fighting isn’t your choice, that’s fine too – you can escape.

“But make sure you’re not trapped in the middle of a row.”
His tips have struck a chord with many TikTok users, who agree that staying safe is largely about ‘situational awareness’.
One individual recalled: “I’ll never forget my driving instructor asking the first thing to do when getting in the car. I said, ‘seatbelt!’ He corrected me, ‘no, lock your doors.’
Another said: “‘Walk with a purpose’ was always my mom’s advice and still is.”
A third, claiming to be in law enforcement, observed, ‘It’s surprising how many people are oblivious to their surroundings’.
