Nintendo unveils a preview of the Switch 2, sparking widespread commentary

Nintendo recently unveiled the first glimpse of the Switch 2, an announcement that has piqued interest for a familiar reason.

The original Nintendo Switch, released in 2017, quickly became a favorite among gamers due to its portability and versatility.

While it can be connected to a television, the handheld mode was a standout feature that many Switch users favored.

Today, January 16, Nintendo has officially announced the Switch 2.

In a statement, Nintendo said, “Nintendo Switch 2 plays Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive games, as well as both physical and digital Nintendo Switch games. Certain Nintendo Switch games may not be supported on or fully compatible with Nintendo Switch 2. Details will be shared on the Nintendo website at a later date.”

Eager fans won’t have to wait long, as Nintendo has slated the console’s release for 2025.

Further information regarding Nintendo Switch 2 will be presented on April 2 during a digital showcase titled ‘Nintendo Direct: Nintendo Switch 2.’

On January 16, Nintendo also released a ‘first-look’ trailer for the upcoming console, and it seems remarkably similar to the original Switch, albeit slightly larger.

One fan expressed on Twitter, “I’m so glad it looks the same, what’s broke doesn’t need fixing..just some upgrades.”

Another commented, “Holy s*** it’s the same thing,” and a third noted, “Kinda looks the same to me except with the two on it.”

A fourth joked, “It’s like the other one…but 2.”

Alongside this reveal, Nintendo also showcased a new Mario Kart game.

The brief footage featured beloved characters such as Mario, Peach, Luigi, and Bowser, and given Mario Kart’s strong association with Nintendo, it would not be surprising to see a new installment launch with the Switch 2 later this year.

In addition to game previews, Nintendo has also announced that players will have the opportunity to try out the console before its official release.
