Elton John has shared that his ongoing vision problems are causing him significant distress. He revealed that there are certain activities he can no longer partake in due to these issues.
Last year, Elton discussed the challenges he faces following an eye infection that resulted in permanent damage. The legendary musician, now 78, has spoken about the seriousness of his health concerns.
In an interview with the Times of London on Friday (April 4), the ‘Rocket Man’ singer expressed, “I can see you, but I can’t see TV, I can’t read. I can’t see my boys playing rugby and soccer, and it has been a very stressful time because I’m used to soaking it all up.”
He described the situation as ‘distressing’ but expressed gratitude for his family, including his husband David Furnish and their two sons, Zachary, 14, and Elijah, 12.
Elton continued, “You get emotional, but you have to get used to it because I’m lucky to have the life I have. I still have my wonderful family, and I can still see something out of [my left eye]. So you say to yourself, ‘Just get on with it.”
In November of last year, during a conversation with ABC, Elton detailed the severity of the eye infection and his feelings of being ‘stuck.’
He explained, “I had an infection in the South of France. It’s been four months since I haven’t been able to see, and my left eye’s not the greatest. So, there’s hope and encouragement that it will be OK, but… I’m kind of stuck at the moment, because I can do something like this [the interview], but going into the studio and recording, I don’t know, because I can’t see a lyric for a start.
“It’s never fortunate for anything like this to happen. It kinda floored me, and I can’t see anything. I can’t read anything, I can’t watch anything.”
A month later, at the premiere of The Devil Wears Prada: The Musical, Elton again addressed his health issues. He took the moment to commend his husband for his unwavering support during this challenging time.
He expressed, “To my husband, who’s been my rock, because I haven’t been able to come to many of the previews because as you know, I’ve lost my eyesight, so it’s hard for me to see it, but I love to hear it.”
