A Netflix romantic comedy featuring Sofia Carson has left audiences moved, with many admitting to ‘crying for two hours’ while also winning over their ‘hearts’.
Just when it seemed like the rom-com genre had lost its charm, a new gem has emerged, resonating with audiences so much that relationships might be at stake.
If you feel like you’ve exhausted all the top Netflix rom-coms from earlier this year and are on the hunt for something fresh, Netflix has just released a new title for you.
Based on Lori Nelson Spielman’s novel, The Life List has been adapted for the screen by writer and director Adam Brooks.
The film features Sofia Carson (known for Purple Hearts), along with Kyle Allen (from The In Between), Sebastian de Souza (Fair Play), and Connie Britton (Nashville).
Boyfriends, take note:
The plot follows a young woman named Alex (played by Carson) whose mother challenges her to complete a teenage bucket list. This leads Alex on a journey, uncovering family secrets, discovering her true values, and possibly falling in love along the way, staying true to its rom-com roots.
The Life List debuted on Netflix on March 28 and has been met with an enthusiastic reception, quickly climbing to the number one spot globally for English-language movies on Tudum with 24,400,000 views at the time of writing.
The film’s impact has been so profound that some viewers have reportedly reconsidered their personal lives.
During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Carson revealed, “Adam [Brooks, the director] would call me all the time after test screenings, and he would say there were so many people that would [tell him], ‘I ended up breaking up with my boyfriend,’ or ‘I ended up changing or quitting my job’.”
The actor highlights that this is the ‘beauty of [the] film’, which prompts ‘all these existential questions’ and offers much more than a typical romantic comedy.
Carson reflected on how we often forget the courage and dreams of our youth and expressed how being part of a film that captures that essence took her ‘back to her [younger self] in so many ways’.
She added, “I left that set a different Sofia that I think little Sofia would be so deeply proud of. I’ve been writing my own ‘life list’ recently, and it was beautiful to see a few of the things that I dreamt of have come true.”
The film has continued to garner affection online.
One Twitter user shared: “Everyone told me this is a romcom but nobody told me i’d be crying for 2h rethinking my life choices, the life list has my heart.”
Another commented, “I know it’s just a romcom but The Life List has me sobbing & rethinking my whole life — but I guess that’s what art does.”
A third viewer concluded, “I just finished watching The Life List, and what really stuck with me is that it’s never too late to change and redirect your path. Life is beautiful, messy, and complicated. It doesn’t always turn out the way you expect, and that’s okay.”
The Life List is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
