Barry Williams, known for his role as Greg Brady on the iconic TV series “The Brady Bunch,” has shared some surprising details about his interactions with his fellow cast members that may alter how fans view the show.
The series, which debuted in 1969, depicted the life of the Brady family, a large blended household. Despite its portrayal of family life, it seems the relationships between cast members were a bit closer than viewers might have expected.
Last year, Barry Williams hinted to US Weekly that romantic entanglements were common among the show’s stars, stating, “We all hooked up with each other at some point.”
Williams detailed his experiences: “I dated Maureen [McCormick], and Chris [Knight] dated Eve [Plum] and Michael [Lookinland] and Susan [Olsen] had a little mock wedding at one point. So, yes, we all hooked up.”
The now 70-year-old actor has further explored his ‘on-again, off-again’ relationship with Maureen McCormick, who portrayed his sister Marcia on the show.
During an episode of ‘The Real Brady Bros’ podcast, Williams and his co-star, Chris Knight, reminisced about a 1973 episode titled ‘The Subject as Noses.’ In this episode, Knight’s character, Peter, accidentally breaks Marcia’s nose with a football.
Knight, now 67, noted Williams’ apparent affection for McCormick during that time. “It did look like she was dating somebody very close to her on the set, judging from the relationship that I was witnessing between the two of you during this show,” he remarked. “You two were looking a little bit close, a little bit less like brother and sister and more like…”
Williams humorously interjected with, “You mean dreamy-eyed?”
Knight described Williams as having a ‘longing’ expression, while McCormick appeared ‘dreamy.’ “You guys you were going through a good week, I would say,” Knight added.
However, Williams explained that their romance never fully developed, hindered by the show’s breaks, saying there was ‘always a little dance being placed that was broken up by hiatus.’
Williams shared that when McCormick had scenes involving other romantic interests, he preferred to maintain his distance to allow her to concentrate on her work, stating: “When she was pretending to have to be affectionate with other guys and going out on dates and stuff, I liked to just stay out of the way and let her do her job and focus on and concentrate until, you know, until an episode that called for us to be sitting next to one another.”
Williams also mentioned that he would often make his presence known during scenes where McCormick was involved with other actors, just to remind her of their connection.
In a 2013 interview on The Oprah Winfrey Network, Williams confirmed the budding romance between him and McCormick, noting that he was her ‘first kiss’ during a trip to Hawaii for filming. “We snuck away. It was a full moon. We walked along the sand, and well, I knew where that was headed. Of course I set it up,” he recalled.
Maureen McCormick also confirmed their connection in her 2008 memoir, Here’s The Story: Surviving Marcia Brady and Finding My Voice. She wrote that she had intense feelings for him, saying: “We had spent the past three and a half years staving off the desire of a mutual attraction despite the intimacy of working closely with each other every day.”
