After being seen in tears in the streets of London, Aimee Lou Wood, known for her role in White Lotus, has addressed the situation following a Saturday Night Live sketch that targeted her teeth.
SNL is known for its daring humor, sometimes resulting in backlash over jokes about celebrities. This time, Wood found herself at the center of a skit aired over the weekend, which she described as ‘mean and unfunny’.
In the sketch, Sarah Sherman impersonated Wood, donning large prosthetic teeth and exaggerating her accent, in a segment called ‘The White Potus’.
The skit also involved a portrayal of President Donald Trump by James Austin Johnson.
During the routine, Jon Hamm’s character asked Sherman’s, “What if we took all the fluoride out of the drinking water? But what would that do to people’s teeth?”
Sherman, in character, replied, “Fluoride? What’s that?”
She continued, “Oh, look, a monkey.”
Hamm’s character threatened the monkey, to which Sherman objected, “No, not the monkey.”
After the episode aired, Wood was seen visibly upset in London before meeting with House of the Dragon’s Ralph Davis.
Pictures from Mail Online captured Wood crying into Davis’s embrace, followed by a lighthearted coffee break.
On Instagram, Wood clarified that her tears were due to an issue ‘completely unrelated’ to the SNL skit.
In an Instagram story, she explained, “Just to say, I actually wasn’t crying about anything the papers made out I was crying about. [It was] something complete unrelated.”
Following the skit, Wood criticized the segment as ‘mean and unfunny’ on Instagram.
“But whilst in honest mode – I did find the SNL thing mean and unfunny xo (Felt righteous might delete later x),” she wrote.
She continued, “So, to conclude today’s rant: @hbo – kind and supportive and never wronged me so leave them alone. @nbcsnl – mean.”
Expressing her disappointment, Wood added, “Such a shame cuz I had such a great time watching it a couple weeks ago. Yes, take the p*ss for sure that’s what the show is about but there must be a cleverer, more nuanced, less cheap way!
“Last thing I’ll say on the matter. I am not thin skinned. I actually love being taken the p*ss out of when it’s clever and in good spirits.
“But the joke was about fluoride. I have big gap teeth not bad teeth. I don’t mind caricature – I understand that’s what SNL is. But the rest of the skit was punching up and I/Chelsea was the only one punched down on… Okay end of.
“Actually one last thing. Not @sarahsquirm’s [Sarah Sherman] fault x not hating on her, hating on the concept x.”
Wood mentioned receiving an apology from the SNL team.
