Blake Lively’s latest film has sparked discussions due to a controversial scene.
The sequel to the 2018 film A Simple Favor, titled Another Simple Favor, premiered on Prime Video on May 1. The film sees Lively and Anna Kendrick returning to their roles as Emily and Stephanie. Michele Morrone, known from Subservience, joins the cast for this follow-up.
Currently, Another Simple Favor holds a 67 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer, which is lower compared to the original film’s 84 percent.
Despite its mixed reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, some audience members claim the film ‘defies expectations’ and label it as a ‘divinely twisted thriller’.
Among the various reactions to the film, one particular scene has left viewers perplexed.
In addition to her role as Emily, Lively plays her character’s twin sister, Charity, and the two share a kiss. This moment quickly became a topic of discussion on Twitter.
One viewer commented: “GUYSSSS I AM HORRIFIED. I decided to watch Another Simple Favor and why is Blake Lively’s characters twin making sexual advances to her HEEELPP.”
Another viewer remarked: “Another Simple Favour is the strangest incest-filled movie i have ever watched.”
A third viewer shared: “Another Simple Favor was good until the weird incest shit started(again)! At least in the last movie it kinda made sense but in this one it was no cause for it!”
Someone else added: “The lesbian incest in Another Simple Favor was a surprise.”
Some viewers noted that this peculiar scene follows a similar moment in the recent season of The White Lotus, which also depicted incest between on-screen brothers Patrick Schwarzenegger and Sam Nivola.
While many found the scene ‘gross’, executive producer David Bernard defended it, suggesting it wasn’t ‘too far’.
In an interview with the New York Post, Bernard said: “No, in terms of that — that’s all [creator Mike White]. Mike is brilliant, and I think those big story turns are not just for shock.”
He further explained, “There’s a specific reason in terms of the narrative storytelling, and the larger thematic idea Mike is trying to get across.”
“As the season wraps up, you’ll see the purpose of that story turn. The show goes there for a larger thematic idea. I love that family storyline, especially the brother story — and, it culminates in a very satisfying way,” Bernard concluded.
