President Donald Trump has responded forcefully to criticism surrounding reports that Qatar may provide him with a Boeing 747-8 jumbo jet valued at approximately $400 million.
Taking to Truth Social on May 12, Trump characterized the potential aircraft acquisition as “a GIFT, FREE OF CHARGE” to the Defense Department that would temporarily replace the aging Air Force One. He accused “Crooked Democrats” of insisting the U.S. pay “TOP DOLLAR” for the plane instead, calling them “World Class Losers” and concluding with his campaign slogan “MAGA.”
The luxury aircraft, described as a “flying palace,” would reportedly serve as the presidential transport during Trump’s term. Following his presidency, the jet would transfer to the Trump Presidential Library Foundation before January 1, 2029, with associated transfer costs allegedly covered by the U.S. Air Force.
Qatari media attaché Ali Al-Ansari has stated that the “possible transfer of an aircraft for temporary use as Air Force One is currently under consideration between Qatar’s ministry of defence and the US department of defence,” but emphasized that “the matter remains under review by the respective legal departments, and no decision has been made.”
The president is scheduled to visit the Middle East this week with stops in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates. His agenda includes discussions on the Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza, Saudi investment in the United States, and Iran’s nuclear program.
The potential gift has sparked significant online controversy, with critics pointing to the U.S. Constitution’s Emoluments Clause, which prohibits government officials from accepting presents from foreign states without congressional approval.
Trump is also reportedly planning to announce changes to the U.S. designation of the Gulf of Persia during his Middle East tour.
