The passing of renowned chef Anne Burrell at the age of 55 has been confirmed by police, who have also shared details concerning her final moments.
Originating from New York, Anne Burrell gained fame through her appearances on the Food Network. Her notable shows included Worst Cooks in America and Secrets of a Restaurant Chef.
Officers from the New York Police Department discovered Burrell in a state of unconsciousness and unresponsiveness, and she was subsequently declared dead at the scene.
A call was made to emergency services at 7:50 a.m., reporting concerns that she might have experienced cardiac arrest, according to a 911 call report made available to PEOPLE by the New York City Fire Department.
Individuals close to Burrell mentioned that she was engaged in her latest culinary endeavor just hours before her death, which added to the unexpected nature of her passing.
Burrell had recently embarked on a new adventure in improv comedy, performing at The Second City venue in Brooklyn as the culmination of her improv class series.
A source close to the chef told PEOPLE: “Everyone said she was so great last night and so happy.”
Another source, who attended the improv show with her, corroborated: “[She] was in great spirits last night during and after the improv show. Typical fun, outgoing Anne, having a blast.”
Back on March 19, Burrell had officially announced her participation in ‘Improv for Actors’ and expressed her enthusiasm for this new challenge.
In an Instagram post, she wrote: “Can I just say it is SO much fun and I am learning so SO much!!! It really helps me get out of my shell… as if I needed that!! #ilovewhatido #luckygirl.”
The official cause of death for Burrell is yet to be determined by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
Her family confirmed her sudden passing in a statement released on Tuesday, and social media has since seen an outpouring of tributes.
The venue where Burrell showcased her improv skills also paid tribute, extending condolences and celebrating Burrell’s joyful demeanor.
The statement expressed: “We are deeply saddened by the loss of our friend and student, Anne Burrell.
“She will be missed and remembered as a vibrant part of our Second City New York Training Center community. Anne brought joy, boldness, and an unwavering ‘yes, and’ spirit.
