A new crime series on Netflix has captured the attention of viewers, who are showering it with praise.
Netflix has been excelling in its crime genre offerings recently, featuring a ‘crazy’ mini-series that intensifies with each episode and a ‘gripping’ crime series heralded as the ‘best of 2025,’ among others.
The latest hit is a drama penned and executive produced by Kevin Williamson, starring actors such as Jake Weary, Melissa Benoist, Maria Bello, Danielle Campbell, and Holt McCallany.
The narrative centers around the fictional Buckley family, and the series has become so captivating that fans are reportedly watching all eight episodes in one go.
The series is called The Waterfront and follows the Buckley family as they struggle with their declining fishing empire in North Carolina and the extreme measures they consider to restore their prominence.
In a conversation about the series’ plot, Williamson told Tudum: “This is about a working man who’s trying to make a go of it for his family. They’ve pulled themselves up from nothing and they’ve built this mini fishing empire in their small little town.
“Now it’s being taken away from them bit by bit. They’ll do anything to hold onto it, because it represents their family.”
The crime thriller has sparked considerable discussion in the ‘Netflix Bangers’ Facebook group, with one viewer describing the show as a ’10/10′.
“It was good. There were a few episodes where it got out of control,” commented another, while a third viewer shared: “Started this last night, binged 6 episodes really good.”
Another viewer added: “Such a good watch if you like action and killings.”
Elaborating on the series, Williamson mentioned: “It’s just about a bunch of people who make mistakes. They do some bad things, and then they get in deeper and deeper and deeper.
“Sometimes they keep making worse mistakes, and sometimes they find their way out and do the good thing.”
Despite the enthusiastic fan reception for The Waterfront, the series has sparked mixed reviews among critics.
Lucy Mangan of The Guardian commented in her review: “It is escapist summer nonsense with – God, I hope – no pretensions to being otherwise. Dive into the adult creek and wallow in nostalgia as the waves of absurdity sweep towards shore.”
Conversely, Ben Travers from IndieWire wrote: “Nothing that happens has to evoke any real emotions, it just has to remind you of shows that did. Even if you haven’t seen Ozark or Yellowstone – heck, even if The Waterfront is the first series you’ve ever seen – there’s no mistaking a sinking ship.”
The Waterfront is currently available to stream on Netflix.
