Matt Healy’s mother recently shared her thoughts on her son’s past relationship with Taylor Swift, approximately two years after the couple parted ways.
Healy, the frontman for the British indie-rock group The 1975, is believed to have been acquainted with Swift for quite a while, though their romantic involvement was apparently brief.
Despite the brevity of their romance, Swift went on to release an album last year titled The Tortured Poets Department, which fans speculated was inspired by her relationship with Healy.
Fans have pointed out that several tracks, including ‘Guilty as Sin’, ‘Black Dog’, ‘Fresh out the Slammer’, and ‘The Tortured Poet’s Department’, may have alluded to Healy.
Denise Welch, Matt Healy’s mother, appeared on Bravo TV’s Watch What Happens Live on Thursday (July 24). When asked about Swift’s album, Welch had an interesting response.
Host Andy Cohen inquired about the album’s connection to her son, to which Welch replied: “Not being her mother-in-law is a role I’m glad that I lost.”
Her remark elicited a few surprised reactions from the audience before she elaborated: “Not that I have anything against her, at all. It was just, you know, it was tricky.
“Listen, you’re not allowed to say anything, and then she writes a whole album about it. Matty is taking it all in completely good grace.
“He’s very happy with his amazing fiancée Gabriella – Gabbriette – who is gorgeous. We’ve moved on.”
Healy and Swift first crossed paths in 2014, fueling speculation of a romance as she attended multiple The 1975 concerts and donned the band’s merchandise.
Their relationship became public in May 2023 but ended just a month later in June.
When reporters in Los Angeles asked Healy about the album’s tracks that seemingly referenced him, he commented: “I haven’t really listened to that much of it, but I’m sure it’s good.”
Welch maintained a similar stance when the subject arose on the British daytime show Loose Women last year.
During the show, fellow panellist Nadia Sawalha questioned Welch: “Taylor Swift has got a new album out, have you heard it Denise?”
Welch humorously responded: “I wasn’t aware she had an album out at all. I haven’t heard anything about it.”
As the discussion transitioned, Welch added: “Anyway, I wish her all the best.”
