Recently, the term ‘Ozempic vulva’ has surfaced as an unexpected side effect experienced by some users of GLP-1 medications, causing surprise and concern.
These medications, including Ozempic, have gained popularity among those seeking weight loss. Although Ozempic is primarily prescribed for managing type 2 diabetes, its active component, semaglutide, can help curb appetite, making users feel satiated for longer periods.
Despite its intended use, many individuals have shared their experiences with the medication, reporting various side effects such as gas, facial changes, and loose skin. Among these, a lesser-known impact involves changes to sexual health and genitalia.
One account from a Reddit user highlighted an unforeseen and uncomfortable consequence of their weight loss journey.
The user shared, “I’ve lost 20 kg or 44 lbs. I’ve been really lucky and I have no noticeable sagging skin in my tummy or my arms/legs.” However, a visit to the gynecologist revealed a surprising loss of fat in an overlooked area.
Experiencing discomfort during biking and prolonged sitting, they discovered, “Turns out I’ve lost all my fat pads in my vulva! She told me my vulva is saggy and I will continue to experience pain when biking/sitting unless I have surgery or put on fillers.”
For those considering alternatives, pelvic floor physical therapy was suggested in lieu of fillers.
Coming to terms with this unexpected change, the user noted a newfound awareness of their pelvic bones. The vulva, the external female genital area, especially the labia majora, can indeed be affected by significant weight loss.
Initially considering fat removal from this area, the Redditor reversed their decision upon learning about the implications from their gynecologist.
In the comments, suggestions ranged from using padded biking shorts to considering fat injections, though the poster was adamant against surgical interventions. Instead, they decided to adjust their biking habits, stating, “I would never ever ever get fillers or surgery for my vulva for this, honestly I thought the doc was insane for recommending these. I will be buying bike shorts and do shorter biking sessions for a while.”
While the side effect caught this user by surprise, it appears they are not alone in this experience.
Dr. Justin Perron, a specialist in plastic surgery, told the Daily Mail, “The labia majora, like other fatty areas, can lose volume after substantial weight loss.” He noted an increase in consultations for genital rejuvenation due to weight loss medications, adding, “I personally see these requests several times a week.”
For those considering such procedures, it’s important to note that a recovery period is necessary before resuming sexual activity.
In response to these reports, Novo Nordisk, the maker of Ozempic, emphasized in a statement: “Patient safety is of the utmost importance to Novo Nordisk. We continuously collect safety data on our marketed GLP-1 RA medicines and work closely with the authorities to ensure patient safety.
“We recommend patients take these medications only for their approved indications and under the supervision of a healthcare professional. Treatment decisions should be made together with a healthcare provider who can evaluate the appropriateness of using a GLP-1 based on assessment of a patient’s individual medical profile.
“We recommend that any UK patient experiencing side effects while taking GLP receptor agonists including Wegovy®▼ or Ozempic® report them to their healthcare provider and via the MHRA Yellow Card scheme: https://yellowcard.mhra.gov.uk/”
