There’s a Netflix series that has captivated viewers and earned perfect ratings, with fans claiming it’s ‘unlike anything else’ they’ve experienced.
Although Netflix hosts a vast array of shows, only a few achieve the coveted 100 per cent rating from critics. Among these is a particular series that garnered immense praise but unfortunately faced cancellation despite its success.
However, there’s a silver lining; the show is set to return, though it may not necessarily be on Netflix, so there’s more to look forward to…
The series centers around Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW), a regional wrestling organization in Louisville, Kentucky.
Once thriving as WWE’s developmental territory, OVW now faces challenges in keeping its operations running.
The wrestling school has produced notable alumni such as Brock Lesnar, The Miz, John Cena, Dave Bautista, and Randy Orton but has been struggling, despite the dedication of wrestler Al Snow and a few loyal fans.
To keep the facility running, Snow sells a majority stake to local businessmen, including radio personality Matt Jones.
Snow has only the summer to achieve his goal as he and the aspiring wrestlers face personal and collective challenges in their mission to save the historic wrestling gym.
Directed by Greg Whiteley, known for Last Chance U and Cheer, the series is titled Wrestlers.
The show, which premiered in September 2023, consists of seven episodes.
On Rotten Tomatoes, the series achieved a flawless 100 per cent from critics, who hailed it as ‘a must-see for wrestling fans, and for those who’ve never seen a match in their lives.’
Viewers rated it 94 per cent, with one fan commenting: “This series was unlike anything I can remember ever seeing… It kept my interest every moment, and it normally takes an action movie to do that.” They further stated: “I absolutely loved this series.”
Another viewer remarked: “This show has so much heart and the people on the show are so compelling! Even non-wrestling fans will love Wrestlers.”
A third echoed: “Amazing story-telling and characters! Must-watch TV!”
Although the show faced cancellation, a recent announcement revealed its return.
During OVW Rise at the Hotpoint Davis Arena on a Thursday night (August 21), Snow confirmed that filming for a new documentary series had begun.
He stated: “You’d expect a crusty old veteran like me to be against a documentary series which completely exposes our business, but it’s the way the world is going, and for a promotion like ours it’s vital.
“These wrestlers need a way to break through, to create their own brand and build their profile. The first series was absolutely transformational in helping our young stars grow and achieve that notoriety, and it lifted everyone up simultaneously.”
Regarding the show’s impact, he added: “We were selling out shows, receiving media headlines around the world, and ultimately, it showcased just how amazing some of our talent is.”
The upcoming series does not yet have a streaming platform, and further details remain scarce. Fans, however, can look forward to something new on the horizon.
The first season of Wrestlers is currently available to stream on Netflix.
