A tragic incident occurred involving a Detroit woman who was shot and killed at the hospital where she worked, just a month after taking steps against her ex-husband.
Latricia Green was on duty at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan, when she became the victim of a shooting by a gunman shortly before 10am on Friday, August 22.
Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison identified the suspect in the shooting as 53-year-old Mario Green, Latricia’s ex-husband.
Bettison explained that the shooter fired several rounds from a handgun following a “verbal altercation” with Latricia. He then fled the scene in a 2011 white Dodge Charger around 9:55am local time.
This led to an extensive search for Green, who was considered “armed and dangerous.” Michigan State Police distributed images of both the suspect and his vehicle.
While Bettison could not explain how Green accessed the hospital’s basement where Latricia was working, Detroit Assistant Police Chief Charles Fitzgerald noted that Latricia had recently filed for protection from Green.
According to FOX 2, Latricia had tried twice to secure a personal protection order against Green. The first request was denied, but the second was granted.
Unfortunately, Fitzgerald mentioned that the most recent protection order had not been served to Green.
“It was not served on her ex-husband, so it almost brings us here today,” Fitzgerald stated, as reported by ABC News.
Green was apprehended without resistance after a manhunt that lasted over 12 hours, shortly before 3am on Saturday.
Bettison praised the officers who were instrumental in capturing the suspect, saying, “Our officers worked tirelessly to get this monster off the street.”
“I would like to thank our law enforcement partners who assisted us in apprehending Mario Green, along with the community who gave us numerous tips about the suspect. No person deserves what happened to Ms. Latricia Green and my heart and prayers go out to her family.”
Henry Ford Hospital temporarily closed after the shooting but reopened later.
Henry Ford Health, the hospital’s parent company, is working closely with police on the investigation and has launched its own internal inquiry.
In their statement, Henry Ford Health expressed, “We are devastated by the loss of our Henry Ford Hospital teammate and our hearts go out to her loved ones – her family, friends, and the people she worked with every day.”
“We are providing resources to our team members who are dealing with the impacts of this tragic incident. The safety and well-being of our patients, visitors, and team members is our greatest priority.”
