A health professional has highlighted five changes in the penis that should not be ignored.
Even as we approach 2025, discussing intimate health issues remains somewhat of a taboo topic.
It’s important to remember that there is no need for embarrassment. Much like any other body part, the penis can provide signals when something is amiss.
These changes might become noticeable during bathroom visits or intimate moments, and they can sometimes indicate health concerns.
Detecting these signs early can not only alleviate anxiety but potentially save your life.
Shafi Wardak, a consultant urological surgeon at The Forbury Clinic, emphasizes that beyond obvious symptoms such as pain, swelling, or discharge, there are subtle signs that could point to underlying health problems.
Here are some less obvious signs to be mindful of.
Changes in urinary habits can be significant indicators. Increased frequency could suggest a urinary tract infection, especially if accompanied by a burning sensation, but it might also signal an overactive bladder, prostate enlargement, or diabetes.
A weak or interrupted urine stream is often associated with prostate issues such as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) or potentially prostate cancer. It can also occur if the urethra becomes narrowed due to injury or infection.
The color of urine is also important. Dark urine typically indicates dehydration, but if it appears dark brown, it may suggest liver issues.
Red or pink urine indicates the presence of blood, which can result from infections, kidney stones, or more seriously, bladder or kidney cancers.
The skin of the penis can reveal underlying health conditions, so noticing changes in appearance, texture, or color is vital.
Rashes commonly result from fungal infections or allergic reactions, but persistent rashes should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.
Bumps may be benign pearly papules, but they can also indicate genital warts, viral infections, or in rare cases, cancer.
Blisters that turn into ulcers are often caused by herpes, whereas painless ulcers may indicate syphilis, both requiring medical attention.
White patches might be a sign of lichen sclerosus, a condition that can cause scarring if left untreated. Scaling, cracking, or persistent dryness can point to psoriasis or eczema, while sudden changes in skin color may signal infections or other skin conditions.
A slight curve in the penis is normal, but if it becomes more pronounced or painful, it might be due to Peyronie’s disease.
This condition arises when scar tissue forms inside the penis, resulting in excessive curvature during erections.
While not always harmful, it can cause discomfort and impact self-esteem.
Adopting healthy habits such as a balanced diet, regular exercise, and avoiding smoking or heavy drinking can help manage symptoms and maintain penile health.
Persistent penile odor often signals an issue. It can result from poor hygiene, but may also be linked to infections like balanitis.
Regular washing with mild soap and water is essential for prevention, along with wearing clean, breathable underwear made from natural fabrics to minimize moisture and bacterial growth.
A noticeable decrease in the volume or force of ejaculation can sometimes indicate an underlying issue, whether experienced alone or with a partner.
Reduced volume may be related to aging, dehydration, low testosterone, or blockages in the ducts releasing semen.
Chronic conditions like diabetes may also contribute.
Weak ejaculatory force is often due to aging or weakened pelvic floor muscles, but it can typically be improved with specific exercises, lifestyle changes, or medical assistance.
If you have any concerns, it’s advisable to consult your GP.
