Police have provided additional information regarding the fatal shooting of Tom Phillips and the subsequent custody of his missing children.
In 2021, Phillips lost a custody battle to his former partner, Cat, and took their children, Jayda, 12, Maverick, 10, and Ember, nine, from their home.
Authorities reported that Phillips was shot and killed during a gunfire exchange on September 8, after being located by police.
The police responded to an attempted burglary at a farm supply store in Piopio. Upon arrival, they encountered gunfire while approaching two quad bikes that had been stopped by road spikes.
One officer was critically injured after being shot in the head. In response, a second officer returned fire, resulting in Phillips’ death at the scene.
Acting Deputy Commissioner of Police Jill Rogers stated that one of the children was present with Phillips but was unharmed.
The other two children were found later, and police have shared details about their interaction.
Negotiations took place between officers and the children, leading to their safe custody.
Though there were reports of one child holding a gun, officials have not confirmed this. Detective Senior Sergeant Andrew Saunders mentioned, “There was a negotiation which commenced with the children, and that proceeded, and they came out.”
The two other children were found unharmed at a remote campsite and were given medical evaluations at that time.
According to Rogers, the children have been cooperative with authorities, though it remains unclear if they are aware of their father’s death.
Their mother, Cat, released a statement expressing relief that her children were found safe, stating (via RNZ): “First and foremost, we are deeply relieved that for our tamariki (children) this ordeal has come to an end. [The children] have been dearly missed every day for nearly four years, and we are looking forward to welcoming them home with love and care.
“At the same time, we are saddened by how events unfolded today. Our hope has always been that the children could be returned in a peaceful and safe way for everyone involved.”
