Netflix’s new mini-series is being celebrated as a worthy successor to ‘Ozark’ by critics.
Viewers are echoing this sentiment, with many having watched all eight episodes in one sitting. If you’re searching for something to watch this weekend, there’s no need to waste time scrolling aimlessly.
Instead, gather your favorite snacks and get comfortable on the couch, because Netflix has some compelling content to offer.
Featuring Jude Law and Jason Bateman, the show premiered on Thursday, September 18. It has quickly climbed to the top of the Netflix US charts, surpassing Beauty in Black and Wednesday.
The show’s creators, Zach Baylin and Kate Susman, known for The Order, have come together again for this project, described as a ‘sharp, no-nonsense thriller’.
In the series, Jude Law portrays Jake Friedken, the owner of a restaurant and VIP lounge located in New York City.
The story takes a turn when his brother Vince Friedken, played by Jason Bateman from Arrested Development, reappears with financial troubles, dragging Jake into a dangerous criminal world that jeopardizes all he has built.
Jason Bateman directs the first two episodes of the series, while Laura Linney, his co-star from Ozark, directs episodes three and four.
Ben Semanoff, known for his work on Ozark, Yellowjackets, and The Old Man, directs episodes five and six.
The final two episodes, seven and eight, are directed by Justin Kurzel, recognized for his impressive work on Macbeth.
The series is titled Black Rabbit, named after the nightclub owned by Jake.
“Black Rabbit is a propulsive thrill ride and character examination about the way an unbreakable bond between two brothers can shatter their world and everything in its orbit,” Netflix describes the series.
Thus far, critics on Rotten Tomatoes have given the show a 63 percent score, while viewers have rated it slightly higher at 67 percent.
Chris Vognar of the Boston Globe commented that Black Rabbit “serves up high blood pressure for an appetizer, heart palpitations for an entree, and a panic attack for dessert,” adding that the series is “eminently watchable, at times even addictive.”
Similarly, Nick Schager from The Daily Beast called it a “gripping saga of loyalty and self-destructiveness that’s elevated by riveting performances from Bateman and Jude Law.”
Greg MacArthur from Screen Rant described it as “darkly thrilling, technically brilliant, and tragically human,” suggesting that “it’s not Netflix’s Ozark replacement; it’s Ozark’s worthy successor.”
On X, formerly known as Twitter, fans have confessed to watching the entire series in one evening.
“I binged the entire season without a single moment of boredom,” one fan said.
“Black Rabbit is a great binge,” another commented the night it launched, while a third viewer described it as ‘an almost absurd mess’ yet also a ‘nail-biting thriller!’
Black Rabbit is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
